Wilco -- 4/6/10, Boston, MA

Recommended Posts

Man this was a Forget about it! I mean in the Jersey way

Speaking not in code but from someone who is from the Heart of Boston

This Band is Exciting because having seen my fair shair or perhaps even more than that they are great because imo they are only going to get better>>>>

and that is exactly what I told my 22 yr young daughter after Lupos (whom I took to Easter Night's Memorable Show)

and after tonight's equally mesmerizing show I told my 18 yr young son the same (whom I took tonight) they are only going to get better

or as Francois Truffaut says to Richard Dreyfus in Close Encounters.. I ENVY YOU...

This is how I feel about this band, for me having seen a Band get to their own early Zenith* and later on rise above it

(This tour for me is akin to Bruce Springsteens* Definative 79 Darkness Tour)

Great Night now onto NH w/my good buddy that split a cvr of Billboard w/ Wilco in the 90's Time for rest,,,,,

Setlist posted below, words above is just one man's opinion. Share yours wherever, but share.

With all due respect to roadhse ma, I just can't in good conscience post the Boston setlist in a thread that egregiously titled. :lol :pirate

So maybe a kindly moderator can somehow merge our two threads...

Anyway, in case the complete setlist was never posted in that webcast thread (or if anyone just wants an easier place to find it), here it is:

Damn, can't believe they did 39 songs! Maybe the most ever in a single Wilco show? I will say that the "acoustic" set was a relatively quiet one tonight and I sensed a few people around me getting a tad restless. But "I Must Be High" was fab and helped to get the show back up to speed. I guess that one was not on the printed list and Jeff mentioned they had gotten a late request for it so they were going to squeeze it in. Interesting arrangement with Pat playing banjo and Nels doing the guitar solo on lap steel.

One other setlist nerd thing: I hear that "Candyfloss" was actually on the printed list but they decided to do "I'm Always In Love" instead. I sometimes wonder how that decision gets made right in the heat of the set.

Anyway, any show with "When You Wake Up Feeling Old" and "Dreamer In My Dreams" is a good one in my book. So, so glad they've kept doing the latter for a few shows now. (And psst, Tamala, the rainbow SG came out for Casino and Outtasite. :thumbup )

And it was nice to hear a good mix again. As much as I loved the two Montclair shows, it was kind of a bummer not to be able to hear Nels' playing, for example, very well at all. Tonight I was fortunate to be pretty close to stage again, but everything for the most part sounded great. The Orpheum may be old and kind of dumpy as a venue, but the Wellmont can't hold a candle to it soundwise.

:worship :cheekkiss :stunned :mellow :blink (I'm retiring my go-to pic of Andy Samberg from Jizzed In My Pants for this mini review)

WOW!!!!

I can't believe the night went by that quickly considering the fact that they did 39 songs.(also made great time getting back to southern NH. about 12:20 an hour after the show finished.)

* I am going to hit on something that I haven't seen anyone else mention or maybe I didn't read every single review (response) : I don't have that concert anxiety over not hearing something I haven't heard before etc. because with a tour like this who really gives a f$%% what they play. With 39 songs: show up and just enjoy the show & take it all in. I still can't get over what I just witnessed.

Speaking of songs I've never seen: I definitely got a few. I actually requested How To Fight Loneliness on the official site.

The Biggest Surprise For Me: One By One followed by Either Way (earlier in the set). Yep, by looking at setlists from previous shows I was expecting the likes of ALTWYS, Deeper Down, PKB, SWTS, Nothing'sever.in this portion of the show.... I was shocked to hear these two beautiful songs back to back.

Can You Feel The Heat? Can I Feel My Heart Beat: Where I was in Orch Center Row S it was fooking hot mate! The best thing that I did was buy a $4 water bottle that also served as a cool surface to rub against my face. (by doing this I missed Wilco (The Song) although I heard it from the upstairs concession area.) I also sought cool air right after You Never Know and stood by the entrance to the back of the orchestra. It was so much cooler and the same dead on view that I had of the band & stage.

One For The STANDERS: Folks! This concert had 99% people standing all night and very, very few people chit chatted. I saw a few people check their cell phones for the Red Sox - Yankees score.

Kamera (No One Did Anything About Flash Photography): Yes, I saw a few people take some flash photos. No one came over and threw out their camera or told them to stop.

I jumped ship. :ninja

Jeff did say that this was the best crowd for this particular tour. :thumbup

Word of advice: Stay hydrated during these shows. Eat well. You don't really want to miss anything. Actually, my bath room break occurred during Jesus, Etc. :innocent

And I do have to say that standing for the whole show really didn't bother me as much as I thought that it would. (and I was expecting to relax during the acoustic portion along with everyone else, but nope everyone literally stood. It was quite a sight to see. People were there for Wilco.)

Pot Smoke Pot: There were definitely about (no lie) 10 people that lit up around me during the show and no one came over. Nobody even went over to complain about people smoking? Oh well. No big deal. The security was very lax and old (laxative ?)

Thanks for coming over to the side of consistent thread titles! :thumbup

Re: your comment about photos, there were a couple of guys near me taking pictures -- and possibly videos -- with their phones. (Some nerve to do it right by the stage, right? I guess Jeff must not have seen them, or at least he didn't call them out or point at them). I think one of them got escorted out. In several other cases, a security guard shined a flashlight on them until they got the picture. So some security guards seemed to be pretty vigilant, or at least as much as possible.

(I just realized I made a totally unintentional pun in that last paragraph! :lol )

When they do the intros during Wilco (the Song), what do they say for Jeff's last name? It doesn't sound like Tweedy.

I think that it is due to the fact that the robot is basing the pronunciation on the phonetics of Tweedy.

Twee- Dy (sounds like Die/Dye right?) So yeah it does kind of sound like Twee-Die.

Maybe if they told the robot that his name is TweeDee or (Sweet Dee).

My thoughts on the matter.

That was a tour de force of the highest order.

Loved that the crowd was up on their feet for the whole show. That was a surprise. Can't be just sitting there all passive for Wilco.

As for the Orpheum, I've been here for 30 years, and always enjoy hearing music there. It may be a dump and the seats are too small, but its a very warm sounding room. What a treat to have An Evening with Wilco there.

U2roolz, out of respect because you are human and you are entitled to your opinions, but I take offense to your pot comment. Just a reminder that you were in Mass where its decrimed and you were at a Wilco show where pot is/was a theme whether you like it or not. FYI, Its gonna stink tonight too in Concord and U2 does not rule! Here you have MY opinion. Great show nonetheless, I must be high!!!

this was my third wilco show, and certainly the best. i was to the far left, five rows back. unfortunately, i couldnt see mikael, nels, or glen. kind of a bummer... the crowd around me seemed to be having a good time, but were relatively subdued. i think most of them sat for the majority of the show. either way, my father and i had a wonderful time. once it was getting close to 11pm we kept looking at one another with that "are they really going to play another one?" face. all in all a solid setlist-- was so happy to hear laminated cat and i must be high in the acoustic portion. what an evening! :thumbup

what a friend and I heard which I missed in Providence was "Jeff Bebe" which is Jason Lee's character from Almost Famous.

my first show last night, been a fan for a couple years but didn't make it to any of the shows on the "outskirts of Boston" that they played the last few years.

went solo, had 9th row seats in the orch.

TREMENDOUS show. This band brings so much power to their music in the live setting. It comes across a little bit on the live recordings, but it's 10x when you are there.

I love that a band with the ability to bring such tender lyrics and peaceful melodies has no problem closing out every tune with a 45 second feedback jam turned up to 11!

Great time and I won't miss these guys again.

I did notice at least one taper in the Orpheum "sweet spot" - clamped to the front of the mezzanine. I've heard other Orpheum shows taped from that spot and the recording can come out glorius.

I had fun listening to this in the background last night while doing other things ... at least until Jeff casually dropped the details of the rumored fest and my head exploded. But the sound over the speakers was great. As bbop mentioned, obviously I wouldn't trade the experience of being there in person in Montclair, but it was nice to hear all the nuances so clearly. (Of course, he actually was there in Boston. But whatever! My point is still valid.)

Really nice setlist, as usual for this tour. I think they should close out with 40 songs in Pittsburgh! For-ty! For-ty!

Oh - what was up with the violin in "Either Way"? Really good synth work from Mike, or actual instrument?

That was me. What I've listened to so far sounds good. It will take a couple days to get it up due to work and life, but look for it on Friday or Saturday.

Almost didn't go, but glad I did. Good show!

MUSIC REVIEW

Tireless Wilco revs it up again

By Mark Shanahan

Globe Staff / April 7, 2010

After 15 years and seven studio albums, Wilco could be excused for an occasional perfunctory performance. After all, the band logs nearly as many miles as the Grateful Dead in its heyday, and rock ’n’ roll ecstasy isn’t possible every night.

Or is it?

On its current tour, the band has been routinely wowing crowds with three-hour, 30-plus-song sets, and the trend continued last night at the sold-out Orpheum, where Wilco put on yet another marvelous marathon show. (Those fans not lucky enough to score tickets to the show could watch it online. The concert was streamed live at Wilcoworld.net.)

The band plugged in, unplugged, and then plugged in again as it played a little of everything, from caterwaul (“Bull Black Nova’’) to winsome country ballad (“One by One’’).

The Wilco brand — part “Blood on the Tracks,’’ part Glenn Branca — was perhaps best exemplified by “Handshake Drugs,’’ a simple melody that built to a punishing cacophony.

Frontman Jeff Tweedy, who can be faulted for sometimes being distant and grumpy, was in fine form, especially on singalongs such as “Passenger Side’’ and “Jesus, Etc.’’ Shaggy and clad, as always, in denim, Tweedy gave lead guitarist Nels Cline great leeway, and the audience was rewarded with spasms of fraught and frantic fret work. (To be honest, Cline often looks like a character from “Shutter Island’’ armed with a 12-string Telecaster Thinline.)

The acoustic portion of the show was particularly beguiling, beginning with “Spiders (Kidsmoke)’’ and “How to Fight Loneliness,’’ the Stones-inflected “Forget the Flowers,’’ “I Must be High,’’ “Not for the Season,’’ and “War on War,’’ which steered the band back to their amps. (“It’s Just that Simple,’’ a New Riders riff sung by bassist John Stirratt, was another welcome surprise.)

The band closed with an avalanche of guitar rock, from straightforward pop (“Heavy Metal’’) to rave-ups (“Casino Queen’’ and “Outta Mind (Outta Sight)’’).

Wilco concluded last night’s show, as they have on many nights since the death of Alex Chilton, with a tribute to the former member of the Box Tops and Big Star.

Three hours after they walked on stage, Tweedy, Cline, Stirratt, drummer Glenn Kotche, keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen, and sideman Pat Sansone played Big Star’s “Thank You Friends.’’

My original words: Pot Smoke Pot: There were definitely about (no lie) 10 people that lit up around me during the show and no one came over. Nobody even went over to complain about people smoking? Oh well. No big deal. The security was very lax and old (laxative ?)

Out of respect to you I didn't expect to wake up to see a response to something that I posted.

Isn't smoking anything pretty much illegal in all enclosed establishments in MA & even NH too?

It wasn't a pot issue, but rather people smoking when that's pretty much a no no. I imagine if people saw them light up would they reach for a cigarette and think that they'd be ok?

Nowhere in my original words did I say that I was bothered by it. I was merely surprised that no one from security came over to put a stop to it. You notice how I never went to complain about it? That's because I wasn't bothered by it.

So let me see if I get this : It's ok to smoke pot in enclosed environments now because it's "decrimed", but it's illegal to smoke regular cigarettes?

If I was a cigarette smoker, I would be pretty pissed.

That's like only selling wine at shows and having a full on ban for beers.

can't wait to check it out.

I plan on losing all my Wilco studio albums and keeping strictly live shows on my ipod. It's like day and night...and I like the night part much better.

I'm not quite sure I understand what he's trying to say with this sentence. Is he saying that "It's Just That Simple" sounds like New Riders of the Purple Sage? Or is he saying that it is one of their songs?
