About 2:45. Not a lot of talk from the stage, but some serious performing. Not as must thrashing, but some inspired playing by Nels -- one of the most melodic leads to Impossible Germany i've heard.

 

I was concerned after the show, about two-thirds of the way through, something didn't seem right about Nels. Standing stiff as a board, not a lot of movement, leaning back. one time when he was playing lap steel, he lifted his legs and leaned back like he was trying to stretch.

 

We ducked out towards the end of Thank You Friends and wandered over by the bus. Jeff came out rather quickly, escorted by someone. He muttered a bit as he brushed past. After about a half-hour, a policeman shooed everyone away.

 

It was an incredible show. Can't speak enough about it. Because it's part of a Savannah festival, there were a lot of "patrons" in the audience. Some exited before the acoustic set. Others stuck it out. There was a gaggle of fraternity/sorority types who seemed to be turning it into a mixer. But there was a lot of hardcore Wilco fans and they were in full throat.

 

I hope the band is alright. I was pretty boorish about stuffing the request line, but they played every one; plus the other songs requested were incredible. They are giving it all for the fans. They are setting an incredible pace with a solid slate of shows ahead.

I think the cop who came out was just disappointed that Night Court got cancelled and he lost his gig.

 

Seriously, security was tighter than usual -- the did haul people out for using even iPhone cameras.

I assume that it's actually I'm The Man Who Loves You since it's in that spot after Hate It Here & Walken.

Can't speak for how they played it then. It is very subdued but still builds its urgency. Jeff nuances the melody more than spiders, letting words carry and flow together rather than the staccato delivery of the more electric version.

 

Nels is a beast acoustically. Forget the flowers was a delight. I thought in the past he had played it with a slide, but it looked like standard tuning and he was up and down the next with sparkling flourishes.

 

Electric-wise, Nels' solos on Ashes of American Flags glowed and flowed like liquid mercury. The transitions into and out of the acoustic sets were inspired, airline to heaven flowed breezily from acoustic into a rollicking, electric-tinged conclusion as the smaller drum set, seats, lamps and periphery were cleared away.

I'd love it if Wilco played Not For The Season (Laminated Cat) last in the "acoustic" set and switch to electric for the big finish with Nels and Jeff on electric guitar.

It was intense without it ... with the full band working behind it it just rumbled along.

Greetings everyone! I'm the guy with the Cherry Ghost shirt waiting at the bus. I have no idea why the cop told us to leave. Apparently they have nothing else to do in Savannah, since there's no public drinking law. Wilco has been my favorite band for 5 years now, but I've never heard of this site. I'm so glad I have a place to talk about Wilco with fellow Tweedy nerds!! I live in a small town in Virginia, where the most popular music is contemporary country and generic crap rock like NickelHinderDaughtryBuckcherryBack. This was the first Wilco show I've seen in 3 years. Since finishing undergrad, I could not find one person to go to a Wilco show with me. I have since met the love of my life, who also has a similar emotional attachment to good music. She is hooked on Wilco thanks to me. Savannah may be my future home. I love the big city feel with the laid back atmosphere. I also know my way around the entire city while only spending a day and a half here.

 

They seemed to have much more fun onstage compared to my last experience in Charlottesville in 2007. A lot less banter with the crowd, but a much better show. The material from Wilco (The Album) added an additional intricate layer to their already eclectic set. Hearing the newer songs live made me appreciate the new album again, since I’ve mostly been listening to Loose Fur and The Mermaid Avenue albums lately. Their acoustic set seemed to cater to the local festival attendees, and it was a nice breakdown for some of the crowd that may have not enjoyed some of Wilco's more experimental blare. I’m mostly talking about the crowd members older than 65. The lamps created a cozy ambiance. I just woke up from a dream of Jeff dancing with one of the lamps like David Byrne in Stop Making Sense. For some reason this reminded me to join this fansite. I’m looking forward to the next show in Richmond in two days. Meeting Jeff is pretty high on my bucket list and it has yet to happen, but hopefully I’ll report a meeting in two days.

Ironic! I was in the front row at an Allman Bros. concert last week. I wonder if I made Gregg nervous?

As a veteran of 31 Wilco shows, the first in '97, this one was a strange one. First, from the 5th row (equiv. of about 10/11th row factoring in the pit and aisle space), it sounded pretty close to terrible - a rare occurence at a Wilco show. Second, bizarre crowd, regardless of "why," & I am not snarking Savannah per se b/c it's a great, great city, but just not really that into it at all - and the band feeds off that. I saw that C'ville show, btw, a last show of a tour that was brilliant, so go figure on opinions. IMO it was far better than last night. Wish I could go to ATL but I am hitting a few of the Northeast shows where those crowds are always up for the give & take. Hard to believe it was 2:45 last night & yep, sure there were some damn fine songs but as a whole, comparing it to the many I've seen, just okay.

Damn, I hope Nels is ok. Having read his tour diaries from his days with Mike Watt, it's pretty clear that Nels would probably rather die on stage then let a show suffer due to pain or illness.

 

I can imagine these long/no-opening act shows are taking a toll on him, considering the pain he's in after a shorter show (as seen in the Ashes dvd).

 

Anyway, I'll be there tonight. Sounds like this run of shows is going to be incredible, and, speaking as a native, there's nothing in Atlanta better than The Fox Theater.

It was definitely Gregg - he lives in Richmond Hill (about 20 min. outside Savannah) so he's around town from time to time. It was weird seeing him, though - like seeing the ghost of Southern Rock.

That's too bad. Hope everyone's ok. I had heard that they weren't as into doing the residency this year since they had to change venues. Hopefully the cancellation was due to venue inadequacy, or something, and not a major health problem.
