In no real order. I grouped a couple guys together where I really liked a band's guitar sound with the two together more than I really like either individually:

Roger Miller (Mission of Burma)

D. Boon (The Minutemen)

Mick Jones (The Clash)

any guitarist that doesnt try to bring further attention to himself.

The kid playing in the basement next door?

I don't get your point, I guess. A lead guitarist should be heard and not seen? Play in the background not the forefront? Play quietly instead of loudly? Play simple chords in lieu of complex ones?

Coming from a lead guitarist, regardless if I try to bring further attention to myself, I will be the center of attention while I'm playing a lead.. That's the whole point of being a lead guitarist. I don't purposely try to be the center of attention, that's just my purpose in the band (while I'm playing a lead that is).

The 16 that come immediately to mind:

Hendrix

Jerry Garcia

Page

Clapton

Jeff Beck

George Harrison

SRV

Nels Cline

Tom Verlaine

Keef Richards

Jack White

Gary Louris (old Jayhawks mostly)

Mike Campbell (da Heartbreakers)

John Dieterich (Deerhoof)

Andy Summers

Frampton

This is totally based on their skill set, not songwriting ability. If songwriting was in there, this list would be much different.
