bwhite0421 Posted March 8, 2008 Share Posted March 8, 2008 i am going to find it very difficult to believe that jeff will be able to pull off a show in tulsa tonite. you could tell from the first song that the voice was hurting a little bit. he and the band gave a fantastic show despite circumstances. we got alot of the less rockin' tunes but i was extremely proud of the 'texas' audience. wherever we all came from we had the decency to shut the heck up when the man was singing. he joked about it the entire nite and you could see alot of inter-band communication and alot of cooperation from the audience. loved the setlist. couldn't really tell what 'album' was being promoted. seemed kinda like a 'being, summer, yankee, sky blue' show with a couple thrown in from some first record that he talked about ;-) once again i want to thank jeff and the entire band for a great time and a great show. did not see any taping rigs. hopefully, i just missed them. good luck tulsa! cheers, b Quote Link to post Share on other sites

WONDERFUL! about 2 songs in we could hear that jeff's voice was really rough. honestly, i thought they might have to call the show. not b/c he sounded bad, but it must have been painful. the band hasn't played here since 2005, so that might have influenced their decision not to cancel. they chose great songs that probably put less strain on jeff's throat. jeff encouraged the crowd to sing along, and there were a fair amount of people who obliged.(note: in all of chaslor's crowd pix from the riv which have me in them, my mouth is wide open and my eyes are closed. i thought, "these must have been taken during kingpin." i now realize it could have been any song during the show. there was a fair amount of shenanigans on stage. at some point mike threw his stuffed birds at glen. at the end of one song, might have been flowers, nels kept riffing. jeff kept looking over at him in a "more?" kind of way. when he finished mike was in the back sort of miming nels as if it say, "he just kept going!" (poor description, but very funny.) (note: i wish there was some way to get a cup of coffee in this hotel lobby...) there was a group of teenagers, 4 of them about 15 years old, up at the front. they were SOOOOO excited to be there, knew the words to all the songs. when jeff said they hadn't played houston since 2005 i realized that this might have been the first time that these kids have seen the band. really exciting! their enthusiam was terrific! (even if the sustained howling during the first 4 songs was a bit wearing... ) i missed meeting up with evilhorn, but met atticus poongoogler! there followed a summit of tap beer, tavern food and discussion of regional differences in teh game of snaps (don't ask me, i'm knew to the whole concept). last bit: while the staff was courteous, parking was a piece of cake and the crowd was warm this verizon theatre in houston is about the coldest, most void of character place i've seen a show. honesty, the designers didn't even TRY to make it interesting. they do have a tiered setup about 2/3 back that allows for good sight lines for those standing in the back. and the sound back there is probably pretty good, but up front there were a couple speakers on the sides of the INCREDIBLY WIDE stage, but no crowd monitors near the middle. so sound up front was almost all band monitor/amp driven. and this place is BIG. not that the crowd is huge, but there is so much empty space. the ceiling is very high, the balcony around the sides is far to the side. and the lighting. bright white industrial lighting. even between the bands. meh.if i lived here i would see shows here, but having been to some wonderful places with a sense of history, this one is like a blank slate. not in a good way. also: not only can you NOT keep the cap when you buy a bottle of water there, but they POUR IT INTO A CUP. lame. last note: john doe's band was fab! i love the way he writes harmonies for he and a female voice. sooo good. i'm regretting a little that i didn't try to talk to him after the show (the siren call of food was just too strong). also, i'm convinced that his bass player lives in my neighborhood. ok. time to go get the car washed. parked under a tree yesterday. when we got out of the show...well...i've just never seen anything like it. pretty disturbing, really. If I would have abstained from taking shots with the crazy british guys at the bar I might have shut my mouth and learned more about her... I don't have much to say about the show other than the fact that wilco was my favorite band, ever, before the show, and wilco remains my favorite band, ever, after the show. Wilco was my all-time favorite band going into this show and has further this show strengthened the fact. I can't believe how many of the songs they played that I was wanting to hear but thought to myself "they'll never play that." And how about the energy of that encore performance!?!?! I think Jeff started to get a nice energy buzz once he hit the whistle part of Red Eyed and Blue that made him want to push that much harder. Just wow. I really dug the loose vibe... and while we didn't get the horns, the fact that they were missing and the way jeff's ragged out voice sounded, reminded me of the way they used to sound back in the day... I had a conversation yesterday about the fact that now... I no longer "have plans" to see Wilco.... the first time in about six months, I think.... oh no... hopefully my morning jacket on monday night will stem the withdrawal.
