What happened to Wilco's edge?

By your theory, we should be listenting to some incredible masterpieces from Jay Bennett. Where are they?

In his hip pocket.

Man, I'm gonna burn for that...

Personally I think Jays last album "Whatever Happened I Apologize" is very good. Sure, its maybe not a masterpiece but I think it is a great album all the way through.

This is however my opinion, I'm sure there will be disagreements

In terms of technical mastery he is up there, but I think he limits Jeff and doesn't

challenge him enough.

Jeff disagrees, and he's probably a better judge of this than you are.

"Tense rivalry within the band" is often what drives great artists to challenge themselves.

Man...I'd HATE to be your co-worker.

Why didn't Bennett take your advice and do this during all of his post-Wilco years?

Rooney,

I like Nels but he doesn't hold a candle to what Jay brought to the table. And yes,

just my opinion and I don't expect all to agree.

I don't want to turn this into a Nels vs. Jay thread, but don't get me wrong, Jay was/is a badass guitarist.. But Nels has that jazz/fusion/experimental/free/chaotic style that Jay didn't have, and that is just more appealing to me. Plus he does a fine job of pulling off the stuff that Jay used to do. At first I didn't think so, but when he melted my face off during the "Forget the Flowers" solo in Asheville, I changed my mind. :)

CrowDaddy,

I guess I mean more "tension" rather than "tense rivalry". Rivalry implies more of a negative kind of tension.

And Wendy,

You're right. Jay's solo career has been underwhelming to say the least.

I guess I'd call it a mutually beneficial relationship. And one that I miss.

Isn't that the underlying argument in all the new vs. old threads? Maybe there should just be a death-match to see who will reign supreme?

I love that version, and Nels appeared on fire throughout the show. he takes the steel into so many different directions.

I think the comment about JB shopping for keyboards is appropo because I think, as good as he was, he was always about recreating someone else's sound. Nels is his own man.

The song about "house chores" was written in the Uncle Tupelo days. I think people have a lot of incorrect ideas of when (and in response to what) some songs were written. (As Jules pointed out.) The choice of when to release them, I guess, would be the only applicable point.
