White Sox pitchers threw only strikes in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings today.

 

That had a lot to do with Tigers' hitters swinging at every pitch. The White Sox only threw 24 total pitches in last 4 innings of yesterday's game.

 

The Tigers are just awful right now. Completely dreadful. It's not the weather. It's not the "team slump." It's not the lack of chemistry. It's that the Tigers are really, really bad right now. They are every bit as bad as their record suggests. Hopefully Leyland's supposed tirade yesterday kicks some life into the team. They literally gave up on Saturday and Sunday.

 

Luckily the Indians are struggling.

It's a combination of slumps and a shitload of injuries. Granderson, Willis, Zumaya and Rodney are now on the DL, Guillen is out of the line-up for a bit but not on the DL, and Sheff and Cabrera are still hurting a bit while playing. And Kenny Rogers sucks. And the whole bullpen sucks. But the guys that don't suck are all still slumping too. It's a combination of bad luck with injuries and just plain old shitty play. I can't believe how awful Polanco's fielding has been. And everyone's hitting (other than Carlos Guillen before he got hurt, Clete Thomas and Brandon Inge -- wtf?). I'm sure that they'll turn it around at some point -- they may even have a truly dominant stretch at some point this year -- but it may be too late to save the season by then.

Fielding? The guy's made two errors, which is a lot for him over so few games, but not awful.

 

It's his hitting that's been putrid. (He's the one Tiger on my fantasy team. :hmm)

It's not just the errors though. He's made some just plain boneheaded moves too. One example from the game I was at on Saturday: In the bottom of the 8th, 2-0 Chicago, and the White Sox batting with the bases loaded and one out, Polanco catches a tricky pop-up in shallow right. Rather than throw the runner out at first base for the final out of the inning (who he would have had easily -- he was half way to second by then and it would have been a short throw) he instead throws home, even though the runner at third was not trying to score, and the runner at first would have ended the inning. Sure, it's not his fault that they gave up 5 more runs after that, but who knows how things might have gone if they'd entered the 9th down 2-0 instead of 7-0. Doesn't count as an error, but an incredibly stupid play nonetheless.

 

But yes, his hitting has been awful too. I'm just more surprised by the fielding.

I agree with you that he's made some costly and untimely errors (is there such a thing as timely errors). But in his defense, on that particular play, it's Miguel Cabrera's job to yell to Polanco to let him know that he should throw to first. Cabrera didn't say a word. Your instinct is to look home first. He threw the ball to get the ball into the infield.

Just double-checking something: can someone navigate to the SI.com MLB standings page and tell me what the Tigers' record is (according to that page)?

 

I'm drafting an e-mail to SI.com and Stats LLC, their stats provider. Just want to make sure I'm not the only one seeing some issues with that page. (The Tigers' record is just one of many errors.)

I agree that the instinct is to look home if that flyball is the first out of the inning. But it was the second out, and the right move in that instance is different. Polanco is a pro and should know what he's going to do in any given situation before it happens. Cabrera could have yelled to him, but he should have known on his own.

Most, if not all, of the team records are inaccurate, and it's not just a matter of being slow to update from last night's games. Check out the Padres, for example -- listed at 7-5, but they won yesterday to move their record to 7-6. That means they never were 7-5 this season, because prior to yesterday they were 6-6.

 

I sent a message to Stats LLC and CC'ed SI.com. I know it's a minor thing, but holy crap, what kind of idiots have they left in charge of this stuff? There are two divisions where the standings are inaccurate because they have the team won-loss records wrong. :no

My grandfather was a NY Baseball Giants fan and when they left he said he'd never support those bums, not matter where they went. And became a Red Sox fan. When my uncle, his son, moved to san francisco in the late 70s, he just about disowned him.
