I'll tell you now - tapers do not like to see people putting up shows in Mp3 format. I recently put up some studio stuff in Mp3 and caught big hell for it - so much so - that I am not going to put up Mp3 rips anymore.

the problem is, even though tapers have expressed their displeasure with shows being traded in MP3 format, nobody gives a shit. it's a total lack of disrespect for all the time and effort the tapers put into these thing. all because people don't have the patience to figure out torrents (it's not hard at all) or even worse, they won't even think about trading or setting up a B&P.

seriously, nobody gives a shit. i certainly don't. if the people want mp3's, that's what they want. i could care less about making some basement dwelling troll happy about what format a live recording is in. if it's in mp3, i'll probably check it out. if it's a torrent, i probably won't. personally, i could take it or leave it. sometimes i wish i'd never heard new songs being hashed out before they show up on record. it can kill the anticipation for the actual record. especially if you don't like what you hear. it all comes down to convienience. mp3's are more convienient for the average joe. that's just the way it is.

You may not care - until you get banned from various BT sites.

I also recall the dudes who work at Wilco HQ asking the webcasts not be put up as Mp3's - yet that seems to still go on.

I think the deal is also that a lot of people do not care about sound quality now - as they want a smal bit rate Mp3 to put on their ipod. I, prefer wav or FLAC - but that is because I do not have an ipod. I am usually very picky about how things sound. I like to share what I have - but after receiving some not so nice emails, I will just stick to upping FLAC - or better yet - as was noted, people should learn BT or B&P.

i'm just speaking from the point of view of someone who has seen their interest in music become much less of a priority over the years. i don't have the want or time to invest in things that aren't already in my usual routine. my interest level just isn't what it used to be. i guess i'm just getting old. time spent with my wife and kids trumps everything else. the years i spent loitering around now extinct record stores and building my music collection seems like ancient history and i have little patience for these types of things.

Count me as one of the ones who really doesn't care a lot about the format. Hell, usually the first thing I do when I download something is convert it to MP3 so it doesn't hog so much space on my hard drive and/or iPod, so d/ling in MP3 just saves me a step.

But I can understand a certain amount of the frustration from the traders. I mean, if you're going to circulate something, you should probably do it in the best quality possible which then gives people the option of converting it if they so desire. Or upload in both lossy and lossless formats, but who is going to put that much effort into it?

And besides, I think we're missing the point here, which should be to say "Cool! Thanks for the upload!" :cheers

Nobody should get jumped on for sharing something with a group of people in any format if it's explained upfront what the format is.

The thing to remember is that many traders do not want mp3 files of anything, so don't burn or torrent mp3 files and then trade them with somebody who wants only wav or flac or whatnot. But nobody's forcing anybody to click on that link, and jhh4321 says it's mp3, so there ya go.

Amen.

Anal-retentive format-babies are ruining music fandom on the internet. If you can honestly tell the difference between a FLAC audience recording and a lossy MP3 one, you probably need to get fucking laid.

Quite badly.

All those people who spend money on equipment and drive all over the place to tape shows for you care.

that's called a "hobby". nobody asked them to tape shows in between their comic book conventions and lord of the rings dress-up parties. they do this because they don't have a life and shouldn't expect anything in return. i'll bet if they lowered themselves to mp3 standards, they'd have a freakin' fanclub of their own. but, that would lower their street cred....egads!...we can't have that now can we.

I think that the wishes of the tapers should be respected. They are the ones who put the time and effort in this in order to share the amazing music that they capture. It would make sense that they want only the best quality recordings being circulated. I am no computer wizz, but I have managed to learn how to convert the flac into wav so I can listen to them on my ipod...its really not hard. I think its the least that everyone else can do...just leard a bit about torrents...not so hard!

No, it's not.

And also - someone paid $$ for a silver boot somewhere and was kind enough to share it with people.

These are two things that were said to me. And I see the point.

Let's put it this way - would you rather hear speeches of your hero Ronald Regan in Mp3 or wav?

Sorry to those I offended I just figured that since a lot of people download these shows as FLAC and convert them to MP3 immediately I may as well post it like this. Torrent is kind of complicated, and a lot of people don't use torrents but would like to have an occasional show. If anyone (specifically the taper of this show) has a real problem with this i sincerely apologize. If people really want to stop other people from enjoying this music because of issues with with file format then maybe you should reconsider why you record and distribute these shows in the first place.

I'm afraid this is what's going to end up happening. the tapers will reconsider putting their shows out there at all. then we'll end up with nothing, because people are way too lazy to deal with lossless formats.
